Het Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age organiseert na de zomer de volgende colloquia:

13 November 2018: Carrie Anderson (Middlebury College) ‘The Old Indies at the French Court: Johan Maurits’s Gift to Louis XIV’

In 1679, Prince Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), former governor-general of Dutch Brazil, presented Louis XIV with a lavish gift that included eight tapestry cartoons, which—he effused—would enable the French King “to see Brazil without crossing the ocean.” The resulting tapestry series—called The Old Indies—would circulate widely in the eighteenth century, finding its way into collections in Paris, Rome, St. Petersburg and Valletta. Despite the popularity of The Old Indies, the political and artistic discourse that spurred Maurits’s gift has not been fully explored, perhaps because Maurits died shortly after the gift was given.

This talk will situate Maurits’s gift to Louis XIV within the context of late seventeenth-century inter-European politics, when heightened tensions between France, the Dutch Republic and Brandenburg necessitated cautious diplomacy.  During this volatile time, Maurits’s gift had to be carefully crafted to appeal to the French king’s artistic tastes, which were closely bound to his politic ambitions.  The Old Indies cartoons, which showcased the natural wealth and abundance of the former Dutch colony in Brazil, would have entertained the king’s absolutist sensibilities on a number of levels, making them fitting additions to his collection.

11 December 2018: Rena Bood, Sabine Waasdorp and Yolanda Rodríguez Pérez (UvA) ‘Mixed feelings. Literary Hispanophilia and Hispanophobia in England and the Netherlands in the Early Modern period and the nineteenth century’

The ACSGA colloquium in December will host three short lectures by UvA-researchers Rena Bood, Sabine Waasdorp and Yolanda Rodríguez Pérez in the context of their NWO Vidi-project 'Mixed feelings. Literary Hispanophilia and Hispanophobia in England and the Netherlands in the Early Modern period and the nineteenth century'.

During the past economic crisis the southern European states were frequently defined as corrupt and backward. National characterizations can endure for centuries. In Early Modern Europe, the Spaniards were the most hated nation. Their reputation was tainted by a Black Legend of Spanish cruelty and lust for power. This anti-hispanism is considered central to the process of European proto-national identity formation. It shaped the cultural and political self-definition of both the Netherlands and England, two nations with overlapping histories regarding Spain. However, this Hispanophobia did not exclude an undeniable fascination with Golden Age Spanish culture, most visible within the field of literature. The emergence of an image of a ‘Romantic Spain’ around 1800 has been frequently interpreted as a ‘paradigm shift’ from Hispanophobia to Hispanophilia, by which the Duke of Alba and the Spanish Armada made way for Carmen and Don Juan. Nonetheless, the tension between these two tendencies was already present in the Early Modern period and endured well through the 19^th century.

18 november 2018: Leesvoorstelling Bredero’s Moortje door De Kale in De Balie

Dit jaar is het 400 jaar geleden dat de Amsterdamse schrijver Bredero overleed. Op zondagmiddag 18 november organiseert Theatergroep De Kale een leesvoorstelling van Bredero’s komedie Moortje. Het stuk wordt toegelicht en de acteurs van De Kale dragen fragmenten van de tekst voor. Hierdoor ontstaat er een goed beeld van de kwaliteiten en de speelbaarheid van het stuk. Publiek en acteurs vinden antwoorden op vragen als: Waarom is dit stuk zo vaak met veel succes opgevoerd? Wat zegt het stuk ons nog? Verdient het stuk een enscenering in onze tijd?

Bredero’s komedie Moortje (1615)  is een liefdesverhaal met een ingewikkelde plot. Ritsart, zoon van een welvarende koopman uit Amsterdam, is verliefd op Moy-aal, een hoerenmadam. Hij wil haar een negerslavin genaamd Moortje schenken. Maar hij krijgt concurrentie van Roemert, een opschepperige legerkapitein. Ook Roemert wil haar een meisje cadeau doen, Katryntje. Dit is het begin van een lange reeks verwikkelingen. Een verhaal vol dwaze avonturen.

Moortje is een bewerking van Eunuchus, een toneelstuk van de Romeinse blijspeldichter Terentius Afer (ca. 190-159 v. Chr.). Bredero verplaatste het stuk naar het Amsterdam van zijn tijd.

Met o.a. Jules Croiset als Kackerlack en Victor van Swaay, Celia van den Boogert, Vastert van Aardenne, Marieke de Kruijf, Stijn Westenend, Sjoera Retèl.

Paper proposals

We welcome paper proposals for a twenty-minute presentation on topics related to the call [the complete CfP is attached to this newsletter]. We encourage papers related to merchant conflicts and their management in the Atlantic, North Sea and/or the Baltic, including aspects related to legal strategies, diplomatic exchanges and more informal means of conflict management.

Please submit your paper proposal (500 words) and a short curriculum (250 words) by 15 January 2019 to Louis Sicking (l.h.j.sicking@hum.leidenuniv.nl). Please do not forget to include your name, institution, current position (PhD candidate, post-doc, lecturer…), and e-mail address in your short cv.

Registration is free and covers coffee and tea. Speakers and participants should be able to cover their own travel expenses and accommodation. (Selected speakers will be invited to join us in submitting their work for publication.)
