ACSEM Object Colloquium: The Map and the Monument

Gibraltar: (on)grijpbare glorie

Hoe een - gewonnen - zeeslag te vieren? Een monument ter plaatse is geen optie. Een graf, een enorm schilderij, meer schilderijen, stapels pamfletten en prenten, munten, en een harnas houden de herinnering levend aan misschien wel de grootste maritieme overwinning van de Nederlandse Opstand: de slag bij Gibraltar in 1607. Historica Djoeke van Netten onderzoekt deze fascinerende objecten en hun relatie tussen de held van het verhaal (Jacob van Heemskerck), de Spaanse vijand en de plaats waar het gebeurde, de baai van Gibraltar. De materiële kijk levert verrassende nieuwe inzichten in de (vroeg)moderne herinneringscultuur, cartografie en de agency van het landschap. Jeroen van der Vliet, hoofd collecties en onderzoek van Het Scheepvaartmuseum, zal als referent optreden.

Amsterdam Centre for Studies in Early Modernity (ACSEM)

ACSEM is formerly knows as Amsterdam Centre for the Study of the Golden Age. The new name comes with a new annual program - the Object Quolloquia Series. The series has the overarching theme: Exploring the World through the Material Turn. All speakers have taken up the challenge of creating a coherent, interdisciplinary program. Thanks to them, it promises to be a year of in-depth discussion and new acquaintances. The full annual program can be found below. 

The Object Colloquia Series

The Object Colloquia Series explores the world through the material turn. Each interdisciplinary duo of speakers takes one object or product as a point of departure to study and discuss various aspects of Early Modern art, culture, and history. These series are organized by the Amsterdam Centre for Studies in Early Modernity (ACSEM).
